01. SHOOK DOWN

We’re starting off pride by paying our respects to queer swers before us the best way we know how—shaking a$$! Modelling the club after Shakedown, as captured by Leilah Weinrub between 2002-2004, which documented the Shakedown Angels (bipoc queer performers) as they performed in an underground sapphic $tripclub! The event faced multiple police raids, with the swers performing being arrested or fined in the wave of LA’s gentrification, leading to the closing of the club and the end of a historically impactful queer (predominantly black) space.

As a team of working queer swers ourselves, we also face our own uphill battles with prejudices, legality and ŵħōřēphobia making this event happen for our community and preserving the sacredness of ever-declining sapphic spaces. Keeping the queer people and swers in our community as safe as possible while allowing unbridled sapphic authenticity and joy! This event we honour, cherish, remember and learn from the elder-queers who pioneered and persevered so we can unapologetically be proud.

Swers are always the most vulnerable people at the club, which is why as Toronto’s only sapphic club by swers, we appreciate not only your support but your open mindedness as we give you a sexy interactive history lesson! Sapphic $tripclubs have been a thing and will always be a thing! Sapphic joy is going nowhere and as you’ve sold us out for almost a year straight now, nobody parties better than you all!

Who are we?

WE ARE A SELF MANAGED, QUEER, SWER RUN COLLECTIVE WITH THE GOAL OF BRINGING AUTHENTIC ENTERTAINMENT IN ITS RAWEST FORM TO YOU— FOR TOO LONG THE “GENTLEMENS CLUB” EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN EXCLUSIVELY FOR MEN TO ENJOY! AS QUEER DANCERS OURSELVES WITH A COMBINED 30+ YEARS EXPERIENCE IN THE CLUBS, WERE BRINGING ALL THE SENSUAL, JAW DROPPING, UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL RAW ENTERTAINMENT OF THE “RIPPER BAR” TO YOU IN A SAPPHICS ONLY PARADISE!

BY CREATING THIS SPACE WE HOPE TO HELP BRIDGE A GAP BETWEEN SWERS AND THE QUEER COMMUNITY, WHILE HIGHLIGHTING THE DIVERSE SPECTRUM OF TALENT MANY QUEER PEOPLE WOULD NEVER WITNESS OTHERWISE. WE DO THIS BY ONLY ALLOWING WOMEN, TRANS, NON-BINARY AND TWO-SPIRITED FOLKS INTO OUR EVENT, AS DE-CENTERING CISMEN ALLOWS OUR PERFORMERS, BOTH RESIDENT AND GUEST, TO TRULY EXPRESS THEIR QUEER SELVES WHILE ALLOWING YOU, OUR PATRONS, TO RELAX AND FEEL SAFE IN AN EXCITING NEW SPACE!

OUR GOALS THROUGH THIS PROJECT ARE HIGHLIGHTING QUEER SWER TALENT, SPREADING AWARENESS ABOUT MARGINALIZED WORKERS, DE-MISTIFYING OUR EVERYDAY WORK AND PROVIDING A PLATFORM FOR SEASONED QUEER WORKERS TO CONNECT WITH THEIR COMMUNITY AUTHENTICALLY. BY BEING A WORKER RUN EVENT, WE ARE ABLE TO AVOID THE ISSUES OF EXPLOITATION, WAGE THEFT AND MISCONDUCT WORKERS IN THE CLUB OFTEN FACE UNDER THEIR NON-SWER EMPLOYERS. WE DO THIS THROUGH PRINCIPLES SUCH AS WAGE PRIVACY, FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION, DIVERSIFICATION, PRIORITIZING WORKER SAFETY AND EDUCATION.
